Message From the Board Chair

I want to welcome everyone to this latest issue of Einstein magazine. The College of Medicine is continuously advancing student learning and expanding the bounds of research. And of course, none of this would be possible without the generous support of our donor community. This issue provides an abundance of examples.

A consistent source of enthusiasm and support for Einstein is the Women’s Division. At its 71st Spirit of Achievement Luncheon, attendees honored Trustee Linda Altman, who received the Leadership Award, and Teresa Bowman, Ph.D., professor and chair of developmental & molecular biology, who was given the Award for Scientific Advancement. It has been a true privilege to serve with Linda for many years. I am inspired by her continued commitment to the College of Medicine, a passion she now shares with her daughters, two of whom have joined the Women’s Division. Dr. Bowman, whose lab I had the pleasure of visiting earlier this fall, is a brilliant scientist, unraveling the secrets of the blood system, cancer, and aging, as well as being an inspiring leader. You can learn more about these two tremendous women, and watch their video profiles, in this article.

“A Transformed Anatomy Lab Opens at Einstein” offers a comprehensive view of the revitalization of Einstein’s anatomy lab and course. With anonymous philanthropic support, the Harry H. Gordon Anatomy Lab and Surgical Skills Center, named for Einstein’s second dean, opened in August on the first floor of the Van Etten Building. At more than 10,000 square feet, the new facility is nearly double the size of the lab it replaces. Einstein’s first-year medical students can now explore the intricacies of the human body using state-of-the-art tools and resources. You can also read about the ribbon-cutting ceremony here.

In “Marilyn and Stanley M. Katz Patio Unveiled,” you can see another new space that is elevating the student experience at Einstein. Adjacent to Albert’s Den (in the former student lounge space), the outdoor extension provides comfortable seating and fresh air for students, whether they’re studying or taking a well-deserved break. I want to thank the Katzes for their continued support of the College of Medicine and our students.

Also in this issue are several highlights of recent alumni and donor events, from the 50th reunion of the Class of 1975 and Einstein’s inaugural open house for parents to the Dean’s Society reception and the Scientific Salon series.

Please take a few moments to read this wonderful new edition of Einstein magazine. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.
