Einstein Celebrates Opening of Anatomy Lab

The Einstein community and honored guests gathered on Aug. 11, 2025, to celebrate the unveiling of the state-of-the-art Harry H. Gordon Anatomy Lab and Surgical Skills Center, which promises to redefine how anatomy and surgical skills are taught at Einstein.

The new space, named in honor of Harry H. Gordon, M.D., Einstein’s second dean (1967-1970) and a pioneering pediatrician, reflects his enduring legacy of excellence in clinical teaching, medical ethics, and advocacy for vulnerable children. Dr. Gordon’s grandson Josh Evans was present for the dedication, adding a personal and heartfelt touch to the celebration.

A Vision Realized

In his remarks, Yaron Tomer, M.D., the Marilyn and Stanley M. Katz Dean at Einstein and chief academic officer of Montefiore Einstein, emphasized the importance of the project: “For our students, anatomy is the most foundational course in their medical education, vital to acquiring the clinical skills and knowledge necessary for compassionate and exceptional patient care.”

Yoon Kang, M.D., vice dean for education and the Ruth L. Gottesman Chair in Education, talked about how the new facility would enhance the educational experience and skills of Einstein’s M.D. students. “This space is an incredibly innovative and collaborative new learning environment. It will seamlessly integrate advanced technology with hands-on learning and demonstrate connections to clinical practice.” she said.

The lab features a simulated operating room, interactive touchscreen Sectra tables, and a modern surgical skills lab, allowing students to visualize anatomical structures and understand their clinical relevance. The inclusion of faculty offices and a student lounge nearby further supports a holistic learning experience.

A Collaborative Effort

The realization of this project was made possible through the generosity of an anonymous donor and the leadership of Ruth Gottesman, Ed.D., chair of the Einstein Board of Trustees, along with the tireless efforts of the education deans, chairs, and the entire anatomy team.

Dean Tomer offered special thanks to Priti Mishall, M.D., the anatomy course director; Joe Ben-Ari, the director of design and construction; Shailesh Shenoy, the assistant dean for IT; Christopher Martinez, the mortuary supervisor; and Robert Caragliano, the manager of the anatomy lab.

As the ceremony concluded, attendees were invited to tour the new space, where signs explained the educational purpose of each area. The atmosphere was one of pride, inspiration, and excitement for the future of medical education at Einstein.
