Marilyn and Stanley M. Katz Patio Unveiled

An 1,800-square-foot space outside the lower level of Albert’s Den has been transformed into an inviting relaxation and quiet study spot for Einstein students, thanks to generous support from Einstein Trustees Marilyn and Stanley M. Katz.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony held on May 29, 2025, attended by students, faculty, and staff members, marked the official opening—a moment of celebration and a testament to the enduring impact of philanthropic support on campus life.

“This beautiful space represents a significant step forward in our continued efforts to enhance the student experience at Einstein,” said Yaron Tomer, M.D., the Marilyn and Stanley M. Katz Dean and chief academic officer of Montefiore Einstein. “We are deeply grateful for the Katzes’ generosity, which brought this project to life and will have a positive impact on students for years to come.”

Yoon Kang, M.D., vice dean for education and the Ruth L. Gottesman Chair in Education, and Yaron Tomer, M.D., the Marilyn and Stanley M. Katz Dean and chief academic officer of Montefiore Einstein, officially open the Marilyn and Stanley M. Katz Patio in May.

Yoon Kang, M.D., vice dean for education, added that when Albert’s Den was opened two years ago, “we envisioned creating an extension allowing our students to decompress, socialize, and focus on their studies in a comfortable and inviting environment. Listening to our students and setting them up for success is very important to us, so we asked for input on their needs for privacy, natural light, and comfort, and that input was key to the project’s success.” Dr. Kang is also the Ruth L. Gottesman Chair in Education at Einstein.

Students have been using and enjoying the new space since the May opening. “The new Katz Patio is a great addition to campus,” said Michelle Lightman, an M.D. student in the Class of 2027. “It’s the perfect spot to take a breather between classes, catch up with friends, study, or just enjoy some quiet time outside. It really shows how much Einstein values student well-being and listens to what we need to thrive.”
