‘Cards for a Cause’ Supports Weight Research

Bridge, canasta, shopping, and the science of weight management were all on the table last September at the Einstein Women’s Division’s “Cards for a Cause” benefit at the Harmonie Club in New York City. The annual event, co-chaired this year by Women’s Division members Carol Roaman and Liz Gaelick, showcased Einstein research, boutique fashion and jewelry, lunch, and some classic card games.

Among those who made remarks were Einstein Board Chair Ruth L. Gottesman, Ed.D.; Yaron Tomer, M.D., Einstein’s Marilyn and Stanley M. Katz Dean; Women’s Division Co-President Terri Goldberg; and keynote speaker Sriram Machineni, M.B.B.S., director of the Fleischer Institute Medical Weight Management Center at Montefiore Einstein and associate professor of medicine at Einstein.

As the event’s keynote speaker, Dr. Machineni delivered compelling insights into the components of metabolic health and weight management, including the idea of the ”set point”—the natural weight range each of our bodies stubbornly tries to maintain. He noted that set points can be influenced by weight-loss drugs like semaglutide and tirzepatide, which have exploded in popularity in recent years.

Dr. Machineni discussed how each drug acts, along with common side effects and the need for users to work with weight management professionals. He made clear that the science of weight management has implications for overall health, including cardiac wellness and Alzheimer’s disease.

Cards for a Cause is one of many events that the Women’s Division hosts throughout the year to support research at Einstein. Established in 1953, the group has raised more than $100 million to fund investigations into breast cancer, translational medicine, molecular cardiology, and more.
