I want to welcome everyone to this latest issue of Einstein magazine. Our College of Medicine is distinguished by a tradition of deep humanism and lifesaving innovation. Together with Montefiore, we’ve earned our place as an education and research powerhouse, and gifts from alumni and friends help make that possible. A few stories in this issue highlight that point.
“A Shared Lifetime of Giving Back to Einstein” describes the decades-long relationship that Marilyn and Stanley M. Katz, both members of the Board of Trustees, have had with Einstein. The two endowed Einstein’s deanship in 1998 and established the Marilyn and Stanley M. Katz Comprehensive Cancer Prevention and Control Program in 2008. Their most recent gift of $5 million will fund the Marilyn and Stanley M. Katz Institute for Immunotherapy for Cancer and Inflammatory Disorders at Einstein. One of the institute’s goals is to arrive at more-effective, less-toxic therapies that can be delivered more precisely to cancer cells or immune cells.
“Climbing New Heights” features an interview with Samuel Silverstein, M.D. ’63, a member of Einstein’s Legacy Society, which recognizes individuals—alumni, faculty, parents, and friends—who advance Einstein’s mission through legacy gifts in their estate plans.
In this issue we also introduce you to George O’Garro, Einstein’s newest trustee, in a question-and-answer session where you can find out more about his background and what excites him about Einstein’s future.
Finally, Einstein magazine highlights a number of highly successful fund-raising events held over the past several months, including the 70th anniversary of the Spirit of Achievement Luncheon, the Einstein Women’s Division’s “Cards for a Cause,” the Dean’s Society reception, and a discussion of new research from the National Cancer Institute–designated Montefiore Einstein Comprehensive Cancer Center paired with a master class in wines.
