The Doctor Is in—and Listening
Arthur Schapiro, M.D. ’62
Dr. Schapiro, his wife, Tobie, and their two children, Jeffrey Schapiro, M.D. ’92, and Liza Browne, established a planned gift at Einstein to create The Schapiro Family Scholarship Fund, which will provide financial aid for students from Southern California who are traditionally underrepresented in medicine.
The Schapiro Family is now part of the Albert Einstein Legacy Society, which recognizes individuals who choose to advance Einstein’s mission through a gift in their estate plans. Why Einstein: “My older brother went there. I also appreciated the opportunity they gave to Jewish students and others who were excluded from careers in medicine.”
Favorite memory: “David State, [then] chair of the department of surgery, said, ‘Are you sure you want to be a surgeon?’ I said, ‘Yes, but I’m not sure I can do it.’ He said, ‘Good. It’s the people who are too confident that get in trouble.’”
Biggest influences: “My wife, Tobie, a Holocaust survivor, and former Einstein faculty Salome Gluecksohn-Waelsch and Ernst and Berta Scharrer, who each overcame incredible challenges.”
Medical philosophy: “Being a doctor starts with taking a patient history. The biggest problem in medicine today is the lack of patient-provider communication.”
Proudest achievement: “I’ve been an Eagle Scout, played clarinet in the Rose Bowl, and worked as an extra in motion pictures—but I’m proudest of my Einstein education.”
Why give: “To be a national presence, Einstein must involve more alumni and recruit more students from the West Coast. Einstein also taught me good values, like listening to a patient. I want others to have that experience.”
