Seetharama Acharya, Ph.D., age 82, emeritus professor of oncology, of medicine, and of physiology and biophysics at Einstein and longtime member of the department of medicine’s division of hematology, who was one of the premier names in the field of blood-substitute research, March 16, 2024, Seattle, Wash.

Uzo Davis Anugo, M.D. ’19, age 32, third-year ophthalmology resident at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in Chapel Hill, N.C., who while at Einstein volunteered at the Charles B. Wang Community Health Center and received a highly competitive research fellowship from Fight for Sight, an organization that supports research to cure blindness, April 20, 2024, Sanford, N.C.

Lester Asch, M.D. ’71, age 76, retired general and vascular surgeon who practiced in the Long Beach, Calif., region and was known for his expertise in cutting-edge laparoscopic techniques, Oct. 5, 2023, San Diego, Calif.

Michael Vander Laan Bennett, D. Phil., age 92, distinguished professor emeritus in the Dominick P. Purpura Department of Neuroscience and emeritus holder of the Sylvia and Robert S. Olnick Chair in Neuroscience at Einstein, one of the founders of the field of neuroscience, and a pioneer in the investigation of intercellular communication within the nervous system, who was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1981 and was a beloved mentor, teacher, and colleague, deeply committed to training future physician-scientists and researchers, Nov. 16, 2023, New York City.

Geoffrey Childs, Ph.D., age 72, longtime professor of pathology and of genetics at Einstein, who used DNA microarray technology to study gene expression, March 15, 2024, Tarrytown, N.Y.

Howard Dorfman, M.D., age 95, professor emeritus of orthopaedic surgery, of pathology, and of radiology at Einstein and world-renowned authority on bone pathology, who co-authored a textbook, Bone Tumors, considered the most comprehensive on the subject, and was president of the New York Pathological Society and of the International Skeletal Society, Oct. 16, 2023, New York City.

Nancy Neveloff Dubler, LL.B., age 82, professor emerita of family and social medicine at Einstein, founder and former director of the  Bioethics Consultation Service at Montefiore Medical Center (1978-2008), and co-founder of the Montefiore Einstein Certificate Program in Bioethics and the Medical Humanities, April 14, 2024.

Albert Franco, M.D. ’00, age 50, maternal-fetal medicine specialist in Boston and associate professor and associate director of the Charlotte (N.C.) Fetal Care Center at Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center, Oct. 22, 2023, Needham, Mass.

David K. Hirsh, M.D. ’84, age 64, neuro-ophthalmologist and clinical assistant professor at the Ohio State College of Medicine at Ohio State University, July 21, 2023, Columbus, Ohio.

Deborah Shaw Link, M.D. ’71, age 90, psychiatrist who practiced for decades in New Canaan, Conn., and a member of the New York Psychoanalytic Society & Institute, April 21, 2023, Northampton, Mass.

Sachiko Nakagawa, Ph.D., former assistant professor of biochemistry, of obstetrics & gynecology and women’s health, and of pediatrics at Einstein who developed a platelet assay for Tay-Sachs disease that became the gold standard for carrier testing, March 3, 2023, New Rochelle, N.Y.

Robert S. Sherwin, M.D. ’67, age 80, professor emeritus at the Yale School of Medicine and an endocrinologist and diabetes researcher who oversaw the growth of clinical and translational research at the Yale School of Medicine, March 31, 2023, New Haven, Conn.

Edward Nelson Smolar, M.D. ’68, age 80, endocrinologist and internal medicine specialist for more than 50 years in New York City and South Florida, March 30, 2024, Boca Raton, Fla.

Ilya Spigland, M.D., age 95, former clinical professor of pathology and associate clinical professor of pediatrics (infectious diseases) at Einstein, who spent most of his career as the director of virology at Montefiore and was a prolific researcher, scientist, and virologist, Oct. 19, 2023. 

Neal H. Steigbigel, M.D., age 89, former professor of medicine at Einstein and inaugural chief of the division of infectious diseases at Montefiore, who served as division chief and the director of the Montefiore Einstein fellowship program for three decades, Jan. 13, 2024, New York City.

Berish Strauch, M.D., age 90, professor emeritus of plastic and reconstructive surgery at Einstein and former chair of plastic and reconstructive surgery at Montefiore, who pioneered the toe-to-thumb transplantation technique and founded the Journal of Reconstructive Microsurgery, serving as its editor in chief for 25 years, Dec. 24, 2023, Rye, N.Y.
