Einstein Appoints Endowed Chairs, Faculty Scholar

Recognizing the accomplishments of Einstein’s faculty, the Board of Trustees has recently approved endowed chair and faculty scholar appointments.

Myles Akabas, M.D., Ph.D., now holds the Dr. George Y. and Catherine H. Wu Medical Scientist Training Program Directorship. Dr. Akabas is also a professor in the Dominick P. Purpura Department of Neuroscience and of medicine at Einstein.


Teresa V. Bowman, Ph.D., was named the Renée E. and Robert A. Belfer Chair in Developmental Biology. Dr. Bowman is also a professor and the chair of developmental & molecular biology and a professor of oncology and of medicine at Einstein.


Mark H. Einstein, M.D., M.S., has been named the Chella and Moise Safra Chair in Obstetrics & Gynecology and Women’s Health. Dr. Einstein is also a professor of obstetrics & gynecology and women’s health at Einstein. 


Chandan Guha, M.B.B.S., Ph.D., has been named the Harry Eagle Chair in Cancer Research/National Women’s Division. Dr. Guha is also vice chair of radiation oncology and a professor of radiation oncology, of pathology, and of urology at Einstein, director of the Institute for Onco-Physics, associate director for clinical/translational research at the Institute for Immunotherapy, and associate director of innovation/tech transfer at the National Cancer Institute–designated Montefiore Einstein Comprehensive Cancer Center.


Amit Verma, M.B.B.S., was named the Susan Resnick Fisher Academic Chair in Brain Cancer Research. Dr. Verma is also a professor of oncology, of medicine, and of developmental & molecular biology at Einstein, interim chair of oncology, associate director of translational science at the National Cancer Institute–designated Montefiore Einstein Comprehensive Cancer Center, and director of the division of hemato-oncology at Montefiore.


Faculty Scholar

Peri Kurshan, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Dominick P. Purpura Department of Neuroscience and of genetics, was named the Carol and Roger Einiger Research Scholar. Dr. Kurshan joined the Einstein faculty in 2019 and is particularly interested in the formation and function of synapses, the tiny gaps across which neurons communicate with one another.
