After more than five decades at the College of Medicine, Dr. Burns is retiring. In this interview with Dean Yaron Tomer, he reflects on Einstein’s history and his place in it
I want to welcome everyone to the latest issue of Einstein magazine. For the past 70 years, gifts from supporters have helped make the College of Medicine an educational and research powerhouse, and a few stories in this issue underscore that point.
Although medical students have their tuition covered at Einstein, the cost of housing, food, transportation, and personal expenses averages $30,000 a year per student. “Outmatching the Scholarship Match” describes a first-of-its-kind one-to-one match program that launched two years ago and has endowed more than 70 new need-based scholarships to pay the living expenses of our M.D. students. The purpose of the match was to create a perpetual loop of generosity, inspiring donors to support incoming Einstein medical students for generations to come. And Einstein alumni and friends have responded, endowing a record number of gifts that have exceeded the $10 million match goal.
Many other alumni and friends have made a point to remember Einstein in their estate planning to support research areas that will keep the College of Medicine at the leading edge of scientific discovery. Since the Albert Einstein Legacy Society was formally launched in 2022, membership has doubled and continues to grow.
Legacy Society member Ellen Marmur, M.D. ’99, is interviewed in our story “The Art of Dermatology.” She and her husband, Jonathan, who is the nephew of renowned Einstein researcher Julius Marmur, Ph.D., explain why giving back to the College of Medicine is so important to them.
This issue of the magazine also introduces the three newest members of Einstein’s Board of Trustees: James M. Butler, Stuart Spodek, and Michael Stern, and it honors Trustee Emeritus Betty Feinberg for her three decades of service. The Board recently recognized the accomplishments of Einstein’s faculty by approving endowed chair and faculty scholar appointments as well as tenure for five faculty members.
Finally, Einstein magazine highlights successful events held over the past several months: the Palm Beach, Fla., luncheon honoring long-standing supporters Marilyn and Stanley M. Katz, featuring a presentation by Einstein’s longevity experts; and three Einstein in Your Neighborhood alumni get-togethers taking place in California, Florida, and New Jersey.
Please take a few moments to read this wonderful new edition of Einstein magazine. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.
