Leslie Howard Bernstein, M.D., age 91, professor emeritus of medicine (gastroenterology) at Einstein and former chief of the division of gastroenterology at Montefiore and Jacobi Hospitals in the Bronx, Dec. 5, 2025, Farmington, Conn.

Michael Ari Bernstein, M.D. ’97, age 55, emergency department chair at the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in Rahway, N.J., double board certified in internal and emergency medicine, and clinical instructor, medical advisor, and leader on hospital and advisory boards, Jan. 26, 2026, Pennington, N.J.

Michael I. Cohen, M.D., age 91, professor and chair emeritus of pediatrics at Einstein, the first director of the division of adolescent medicine at Montefiore Hospital, and later chair of the department of pediatrics, whose contributions to conceptualizing adolescence as a distinct area for clinical inquiry led to the formation of a section on adolescent health in the American Academy of Pediatrics, April 11, 2026, Ridgewood, N.J.

Sasha England, Ph.D., age 96, professor emeritus of biochemistry who maintained a lab and taught students at Einstein for more than 50 years and co-authored a history of Einstein’s department of biochemistry, Jan. 13, 2026, Israel.

George Kaysen, M.D., Ph.D. ’72, age 82, nephrologist recognized for his contributions to the understanding of inflammation, nutrition, and protein metabolism in chronic kidney disease and end-stage renal disease, who was professor emeritus of medicine (nephrology) and former chair of nephrology and biochemistry at the University of California Davis School of Medicine, March 2026, New York City.

Donald P. Kotler, M.D. ’73, age 78, professor of medicine (gastroenterology) at Einstein, respected for his work in the fields of gastroenterology, nutrition, and HIV medicine and for his commitment to improving the health of his patients, who was honored by Einstein in 2006 with its Distinguished Alumnus Award, Feb. 22, 2026, New Rochelle, N.Y.

Ruth Freeman Lewis, M.D. ’60, age 89, professor emerita of obstetrics & gynecology and women’s health and of medicine (endocrinology) at Einstein and a recognized authority on menopause, hormone replacement therapy, osteoporosis, and vitamin D deficiency, who was co-founder and director of the Menopause Research and Treatment Center and of the Bone Densitometry Unit at the Institute for Women’s Health, Genetics, and Human Reproduction at Montefiore, Feb. 15, 2026, New Rochelle, N.Y.

Mehul Patel, Ph.D. ’00, age 52, director of project management for GlaxoSmithKline for many years and more recently for Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Jan. 16, 2026, New Hope, Penn.

Aida Reyes, age 59, administrative assistant in the Institute for Animal Studies, Jan. 26, 2026, Bronx, N.Y.Jesse Roth, M.D. ’59, age 91, endocrinologist who helped revolutionize the understanding of diabetes and who spent five decades as a leading theoretician and scientist at the National Institutes of Health, Johns Hopkins University, and the Feinstein Institutes for Medical Research, March 11, 2026, Hurley, N.Y.

Herbert Howard Schaumburg, M.D., age 93, distinguished professor emeritus in the Saul R. Korey Department of Neurology and of pathology at Einstein, Nov. 29, 2025, City Island, N.Y.

Kenneth E. Seslowe, M.D. ’64, age 86, orthopedic surgeon in New York City who dedicated his life to medicine and service, Feb. 13, 2026, White Plains, N.Y.

Alexander Robert Spitzer, M.D. ’80, age 70, fellow of the American Academy of Neurology who spent more than four decades in the field of neurology and was recognized as one of the “Best Doctors in America,” Feb. 27, 2026, Lake Leelanau, Mich.

Marie-Ange Tardieu, M.D. ’85, age 68, reconstruction and plastic surgeon at Montefiore Einstein and longtime Einstein Alumni Association Board of Governors member, March 31, 2026, New York.

Jonathan Marvin Tobis, M.D. ’73, age 77, emeritus professor of medicine (cardiology) at the University of California, Los Angeles, who helped pioneer the field of interventional cardiology, performing the first digital coronary angiogram while at the University of California, Irvine, and helping bring about the modern era of coronary artery stenting, Sept. 13, 2025, Santa Barbara, Calif.

Guita Epstein Wilf, M.D. ’76, age 74, retired medical director of the Yale New Haven Hospital Adolescent Intensive Outpatient Program and a compassionate and dedicated child and adolescent psychiatrist, Dec. 11, 2025, New York City.

Martin M. Zatz, M.D., Ph.D. ’72, age 82, distinguished biomedical researcher who spent decades at the National Institutes of Health studying circadian rhythms and melatonin regulation and later served as a longtime editor of the Journal of Biological Rhythms, Jan. 24, 2026, New York.
